Nellie Roxx, born Janel Jackson, to Jacqueline Jackson and Lyndon Connell, is what you would call a disciple of music. Hailing from New Hope Westmoreland, she grew up with her and grandparents and uncles who all encouraged her to be diverse and go into music. While attending St. Paul's Primary at 8 years old, she was introduced to the recorder by Mr. Nugent Clarke her music teacher. Though a basic instrument, it embedded in her, the love that she has for music today. She was then invited by Mr. Clarke to visit the Westmoreland's Community Music School (WCMS) run by Mr. Clarke and Ms. Grant, where quickly she became a full time student. It was at this point the passion she had was evident where she was introduced to different instruments, such as: the trumpet, the flute and the piano. However, she was still key at playing the recorder. It didn't take much time for her to be efficient enough to perform and enter JCDC competitions representing both her primary school and WCMS doing multiple pieces. It wasn't until the age of 10 she was certain she wanted to express herself vocally by joining choirs at both schools and even church. She swiftly moved to lead singer and on some occasions represented the school in that manner, until she got more serious about her academics. Rough times lay ahead...The music did not stop there, however even though now she was attending Mannings High School, solely, she still continued music through song writing and poetry. It was at the age she was going through a lot where she wrote emotionally riveting song 'Answers Answers' (which she recently created a piano ballad to and voiced).
At 13 she moved to New York along with her brother to live with their mother and step-father. While in New York, she was introduced to people from all walks of life. She became familiar with new kinds of music and what it really meant. She soaked this all in and created astyle of writing that belonged to her. The next year, she moved to the small, quiet Connecticut, which boomed at night with energetic Jamaican parties. There in 2004 she met some Jamaicans from school who invited her over their house to voice a little part on Quain's song (upcoming artiste). This was the first time voicing a song. Somehow the song turned into a duet which was the talk of the school for weeks. Sure enough, with this small amount of recognition, she began doing some recordings of her own and sending it off to friends to get their opinions.
In early 2008, through Ash, got acquainted with Tomi Trouble, now manager, a selector from Equlibrium Sound in Portmore, Jamaica. "Fresh To Death" which had an old school Hip Hop feel to it captured Tomi's attention. By this time, she knew the basics of mixing down a song since all the tracks that she had made thus far were recorded by herself at home. So far, so good , her future in music took a turn for the best when she was introduced to Waiting In Vain riddim created by the versatile Smokeshop from Smokeshop Studios in Canada. "Got Me Saying (Uh Oh)" was the first track that got recognition and airplay on radio stations such as Linkz FM by DJ Sani Ranks (in Savanna La Mar, Jamaica).
What Nellie has in store for her listeners is beyond anything routine, she hopes to bring a breath of fresh air and something new to Jamaica with a bit of Hip Hop, Culture Reggae, R&B, Disco, Classical and Jazz. She definately plans to set Jamaica on fire.
